A chilling case of filicide has emerged from Shampur village in Bankura, where a father allegedly murdered his daughter simply because she refused to vacate a room in his house. The victim, Bhabani Mal, had been married two years ago but returned to her father Ishan Mal’s home just three months later due to marital disputes. Since then, she had been occupying one of the two rooms in the small house, which became a point of contention for her father.
The conflict escalated over the living space, as Ishan lived in the other room with his four other children and a stepmother. Driven by the desire to reclaim the room Bhabani was using, Ishan allegedly crushed her to death with bricks. To cover his tracks, he stuffed her body into a sack and transported it to the dense forests of Digshuli in the neighboring Onda police station area, where he dumped it into a secluded well.
Bhabani had been missing for 13 days before the crime came to light on December 31. Locals gathering wood in the Digshuli forest were alerted by a foul smell emanating from a well and spotted a floating sack. They immediately informed the Onda police, who recovered the decomposed remains. The subsequent investigation and identification led the police back to Shampur village, where the needle of suspicion pointed toward the father.
During interrogation, Ishan Mal reportedly confessed to the brutal killing, citing the space constraint and his daughter’s refusal to leave as the primary motives. The Bankura Sadar Police have formally arrested him and are conducting further inquiries to determine if anyone else assisted him in disposing of the body.
